Project Overview
DCMS conducted a high-accuracy 3D laser scan of the MacMillan Theatre, a historic performing arts venue located within the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Music. The goal of this project was to capture the existing conditions of the theatre, ensuring that future renovation efforts align with its original architectural integrity while modernizing key structural and technical elements.
Deliverables
High density point cloud cloud data
2D CAD Drawings: Delivering detailed floor plans, seating layouts, and stage elements
LOD 300 Revit Model: Detailed digital twin generated from point cloud data
Virtual Matterport Walkthrough

Our Role & Technology
Using terrestrial LiDAR scanning, our team captured the full spatial geometry of the theatre, from seating arrangements to backstage zones. All point cloud data was processed and converted into a detailed digital twin used for planning and restoration. Tools Used:
Matterport Pro3 for 3D capture
Autodesk Revit for BIM modeling
AutoCAD software for 2D documentation
Key Challenges & Solutions
Complex interior geometry: Our LiDAR scanning captured detailed stage, seating, and acoustic features.
Preservation of historic character: All documentation aligned with original architectural elements.
Remote design collaboration: Matterport walkthroughs enabled remote access for the renovation team.
