Project Overview

Located in the heart of Montreal’s McGill University campus, this as-built modeling project focused on the tunnel system beneath Burnside Hall, covering approximately 7,756 sq. ft. The primary objective was to document the tunnel’s floor and ceiling slab geometry with high precision to support future engineering assessments and structural interventions. The surrounding urban and academic setting required detailed attention to structural elements and ground conditions.

Our Role & Technology

DCMS developed a highly accurate Revit model to reflect the tunnel’s complex geometry and surface variations. The work was based on a detailed LiDAR scan using the Leica RTC360, ideal for environments requiring precise level mapping.

Modeled the tunnel’s floor and ceiling slabs using point cloud sub-element editing for accurate slope and surface adjustments.

Captured and modeled key infrastructure zones, drainage points, manholes, and conduits, enhancing detail and resolution.

Modeled surrounding architectural features, including walls, sidewalks, and windows, using cross-sectional references for improved spatial accuracy.

Key Challenges & Solutions

Slab Geometry & Elevation Mapping: Achieved precise level representation by modifying floor elements directly from scan data using sub-elements.

Drainage Area Modeling: Increased modeling granularity near manholes and drains to meet the client's precision requirements.

Section-Based Accuracy: Used orthogonal sections across the tunnel to detect and reflect variations in surrounding structures and terrain.
